9/1/2023 0 Comments Star crossed unveiledWe then got to party along to “Kaceyoke,” where we all sang “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, a song with a message quite like star-crossed’s. She told us how her label thought the song was far too depressing to successfully launch her career, but she luckily proved that notion wrong. fans got the treat of Musgraves’ first single “Blowin’ Smoke” as well as its backstory. Before “hookup scene,” a song that talks about rejoining the dating world and questioning the necessity of her divorce, she talked about the star-crossed condoms she is selling (no joke) – and offered some rather unconventional relationship advice: “Everyone’s terrible, so be careful if you do move on.” It was then time to go back to star-crossed for two songs, “camera roll” and “hookup scene.” Musgraves littered the songs with funny personal remarks and stories. However, performing some of the other spiteful songs from GH such as “Space Cowboy” and “High Horse” seemed less agonizing for the singer. I was of course grateful to hear these songs live, though it seemed like singing some of the most loving songs such as “Golden Hour” and “Butterflies” was painful for Musgraves (with my non-existent psychoanalysis qualifications). While the concert of course highlighted star-crossed, Musgraves knew that her fans wanted to hear some of her earlier songs, so she dedicated a whole five-song set in the middle to Golden Hour (and did two more GH songs in the encore). She even started shooting golden checks into the crowd during “breadwinner” and saying, “It’s true, he can’t handle me!” Musgraves was able to make some fun of herself and the situation. After performing “star-crossed” and “good wife,” she added, “I was a great wife,” which set the tone for the rest of the night: singing emotional songs, all the while slightly roasting her ex-husband and opening up about her current love life. Then, of course, Musgraves took the stage (in an incredible black jumpsuit, may I add) as we watched an animated heart break in two. King Princess doesn’t have the country flare of Musgraves, but they both love to jam to their own songs and have a tastefully-vulgar style (I realize that sounds like an oxymoron, but it isn’t). Her energy matched that of Musgraves quite nicely. I didn’t arrive in time to see MUNA, the first opener, but I did get to see King Princess, the second opener, and she did a great job of setting the tone, even giving fans a first listen to her soon-to-be-released album. Nevertheless, there are still some great pop tracks on the album, such as “breadwinner” and “cherry blossom,” as well as painfully sincere ballads including “camera roll” and “hookup scene.” It’s an album that you hope you never need to listen to, but it’s there for you if you do – similar to thank u, next by Ariana Grande, IGOR by Tyler, the Creator, and 808s & Heartbreak by Kanye West. The album was for herself more than her fans. Whereas her previous album Golden Hour was a celebration of love, star-crossed is an honest capsule of her dealing with the downfall. She needed to get it out of her system after divorcing Ruston Kelly in 2020. Star-crossed is a depressing album, and the 33-year-old contemporary country artist even said it herself. But after seeing the album brought to life in concert, I think much more highly of it. I won’t lie: as an avid Musgraves fan, star-crossed is not my favorite album. 20, I had the privilege of going to the United Center and experiencing the Kacey Musgraves tour. “We’re gonna have some fun mixed with some depression” -Kacey Musgraves
